Wiki - A web page for everyone

Wiki what is it?

A web page, which can be changed by all users

Wiki is in Ward's original description: The simplest online database that could possibly work.

Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.

Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.

Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users.

The history about wiki:

This began on March 25, 1995. A little later (May 1, 1995), an InvitationToThePatternsList? caused an increase in participation. Growth has continued since then, to the point where the average number of new pages ranges between 5 and 12 per day.

WardsWikiTenthAnniversary? occurred on March 25, 2005. At that time, we had about 30690 pages.

How does wiki work?

A wiki usually has a link at the bottom of the page that reads “Edit text of this page”. Anyone can click that link and then instantly add, delete or change the text or structure of the page. Or they can create a new page of their own. No authoring tool, and usually no login or permission, is required.
